The Standard Schnauzer – A Class Act in Dog Breeding!
We have produced a 9 minute video for you about the Standard Schnauzer, and placed it on YouTube. You can watch it below. Just click twice in the centre of the video player screen.
If you acquire a Standard Schnauzer puppy, you can't know for sure what he or she will grow up to be like, as there is quite a wide variability between dogs in many ways.
There are energetic Schnauzers, and placid Schnauzers and careful observation of the puppies will only help you to judge the temperament of each puppy to some extent, and the rest will be guesswork!
Just about everyone that knows the breed emphasise that they are the smartest of all breeds, and one of the best problem-solvers.
The Standard Schnauzer is clever, strong-willed, and persistent.
But, they will also tell you that bored Standard Schnauzers can make a shambles of your house and yard in no time flat!
Others have said that if you have small children, or if you or anyone who lives with you is elderly or infirm, they do not recommend Standards as puppies. However, this can be said about almost all breeds if they are left for long periods and are not given sufficient stimulation. Let us not forget that there will also be an element of the dog buying population which really does not wish to give as much time and energy to their pet dogs as they should, and in reality should have been content with say, the lesser demands of a cat.
At the minimum, Schnauzers need a long brisk walk every day, but this is really only the very minimum and they need family company and involvement through the day as well of course..
Many Standard Schnauzers can be dominant or aggressive toward other dogs of the same sex.
Despite its many outstanding characteristics, the Standard has never been as popular as the Miniature or the Giant Schnauzer.
Training
Many breeders recommend professional training assistance to get the most out of this breed. Schnauzers can be a handful, so training should be started early.
Tip
If you don’t plan to show your dog then you can have your Schnauzer clipped for easier maintenance.
Conclusion
The Standard is one of the most intelligent of all dog breeds but his active and strong-willed nature means that he must be thoroughly socialised and obedience trained at an early age.
The sound, reliable temperament, rugged build, and dense weather-resistant wiry coat make for one of the most useful, powerful, and enduring working breeds.
