The Coonhounds group consists of six distinct, purebred breeds including the Black and Tan, Bluetick, English, Plott hound, Treeing Walker and the Redbone.
The Coonhounds are a medium to large dog, weighing 60-95 lbs. as adults. Mainly bred for hunting, they make wonderful family pets. They are gentle, loving and extremely tolerant. The will tend to wander to follow a good scent, so you should ensure that they are kept in a well fenced area and walked on a leash at all times.
Coonhounds have a wonderful singing voice. These hounds each have their own distinctive voices and a very varied range of tones it is and which is used by them to very effectively communicate their needs to their owners.
Overall, owning a coonhound can be an extremely rewarding experience.
Redbones are known in particular to make excellent water dogs, and their webbed feet are great for their love of swimming.
Redbone Coonhounds are a great dog to take on long walks, jogs or hiking, as they have a high endurance level.
Redbones come in 3 distinct shades; red, light brown, and dark brown.
They are all instinctive hunters, and it is not difficult to train the breed to follow scent and tree a quarry. The breed has a strong desire to please his master.
Redbone Coonhounds have a deep, broad chest and straight, muscular legs.
They can make excellent pets especially if they are kept as an outside type of dog with plenty of space to roam.
These dogs are generally excellent with children but due to their hunting instincts do not tend to mix well with other household pets, such as cats. They can however, become overly excited when around small children, if not disciplined properly.
These dogs are natural hunters and are always eager to please their owner.
The Redbone is a generally healthy breed, but like many other breeds are prone to hip dysplasia, which actually means a condition of a malformed hip joint (which can cause lameness or arthritis) and obesity comes with the reduced activity of such individuals.
As always, proper exercise and nutrition are important.
They have broad, flat, clean-cut heads with square muzzles, dark brown eyes and thin, low-hanging ears. They have straight, muscular legs and medium-length tails.
The first dogs were commonly called "Saddlebacks". The background color was red, and most of them possessed black saddle markings.
Breeders focused initially only on developing a showy, red dog. After this was accomplished, the focus was shifted to performance. Breeders in the American South, Tennessee and Georgia to be precise, desired a hound with more speed and a hotter sniffer than many of the existing coonhounds.
Redbone Coonhounds are very friendly and gentle dogs. Of all the Coonhounds, many say that the Redbones are the most even tempered and family oriented.
