The Catahoula Leopard Dog is best thought of as a multi-purpose working dog. They are still used today to round up cows and other livestock, due to their herding abilities. This breed is well muscled and powerful but not bulky, giving the impression of agility and endurance. The breed should not resemble either a sighthound or a bulldog in appearance.
The breed is also called the Catahoula Cur or or in full it is the Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog, if you have not guessed where the origin of the name comes from, please note that it is named after Catahoula Parish in the state of Louisiana in the United States. The breed is also, sometimes, incorrectly referred to as the "Catahoula Hound" or "Catahoula Leopard Hound", as it is not a hound, but a Cur.

The Catahoula is believed by many to be the oldest dog breed which is native to North America. That is the oldest, apart from the dogs descended from Native American-created breeds, and was from a Spanish dog but others say that the breed's ancestry comes instead from Nordic Wolfhound and actually some three centuries before the Spanish found America.
The Catahoula, they say, can out-work and out-last any other breed. It is strong, active, and has natural instinct and working style all its own.
The Catahoula can be stubborn or hard-headed. A combination of love, praise, perseverance and a firm no-nonsense attitude is required when training these particular dogs. For this reason they may not be the best choice for first-time dog owners and it is those owners who have had experience raising and training dominant dogs are best suited for this breed.

The coat of a Catahoula Bulldog is short and straight and needs very little grooming attention. Their coats are surprising as they come with an array of beautiful colors. The most famous CLD colors are the merle or leopard colors blue, red, tan ,gray and silver.
The variability is so wide that there are said to be no two Catahoula dogs totally alike in coat or eye color. Their eyes can in fact vary greatly in color and can be brown, blue , aqua , green , gold or a combination of any of these colors in one eye which is called 'Cracked' or even we have seen two eyes that are two different colors altogether!
They tend to be wary of strangers but are at home with children. Many owners do say that if a child and pup are allowed to grow together, you will not have to worry about your child.
However, always treat such suggestions with caution and don't leave young children with any dog when no adults are present. The CLD as a breed is highly protective of their family and territory and can as a result become aggressive toward strangers. They are of course highly affectionate and playful with their owners.
The Catahoula tends to loving and tender towards children and other pets, but a few can be aggressive. The CLD becomes a natural baby-sitter, and it is said that no harm shall come to that child without the Catahoula making an attempt to prevent it.
